Well funny you should ask… for a while there we were gigging our daggy old arses off, we made hay while the sun shone, but it's eased back a bit for now, so we're making the most of it, writing new songs, learning new covers, making videos and attending to a few long overdue health issues (Christ, I'm even starting to sound old.) The good news is I'm feeling a million bucks and can't wait to get back into it. One of the priorities was to tidy this website up, it's a work in progress and we're a bit limited by both my lack of computer skills and the ability of the way the website template works. In the meantime, it'll have to do.
So, I thought it might be interesting to tell you a bit about my theory on recording and videos. After doing two albums up at old mate Bills place and sitting back just gigging for a year or two and looking at how the musical world goes around, we've figured out the only reason you'd bother recording an album is for self-satisfaction and to gain some credibility. There is a possibility you'll get your money back, but it's most likely a long-term plan, it's getting harder to sell CD's, most people don't actually own a CD player anymore, and Spotify and the rest won't pay a cent, just forget them. Bands are left with no way to recoup recording costs except for the royalties, which can be surprisingly good, and some sympathy sales of CDs. But really, when it comes down to it, we have nothing to sell anymore! Having said that, I probably one day will record a studio album again, but in the meantime, we have decided to just do home recordings, which I know won't sound as “professional” as paying for studio recordings but from what I can see being too slick is the enemy anyway. We have also started making our own videos el cheapo style, as the cost of doing a professional video kicks off around $5000 and, once again, why do that? You might get played on CMT, maybe, but their primetime ratings are about 100,000 Australia wide, and I would bet at least half of them are out making a cup of tea or outside pruning the roses and aren't actually watching at all. The last video I made I put on Facebook has had about 10,000 views. The one before that had 1100 and before that 8000. Thats scattered across different Facebook pages and Instagram, but a view is a view. I'm doing it this way because I figure less stress, it's free and I can do them lying in bed at night. Plus, it's very liberating not being under the thumb of various third parties, (studio's, engineers, mastering facilities). We do what we want when we want. You can be a lot more productive and enjoy the whole thing instead of stressing about money and time.
So that's kind of where we are at the moment. We have some great gigs coming up later in the year, the regular Hero of Waterloo gigs just keep getting better, and a road trip to Wagga in October, somewhere we haven't been yet, A Rob Luckey and The Luckey Bastards weekend in late September, and I'm going to try and get something up the north coast so we can visit Kylies uncle (Johnny Redneck, an ex-country music DJ and cool guy), as well as our regular Friday nights at The Hero Of Waterloo at The Rocks, and our twice monthly gigs at The Merton in Rozelle. Apologies to South Coast locals, I've had a few people wanting to know when we're playing down here again, there's nothing booked right now but depending how dates work out we do have a venue down here that is keen so when I know I'll put them up in the calendar. Meanwhile, onward and upward, hope to see you at a gig soon
Stu
